Der Song wurde eigentlich für Michael Jackson geschrieben. Autoren sind Patrick Leonard und Bruce Gaitsch. Der Song sollte auf seinem Album B.A.D. erscheinen. Michael Jackson hat den Song aber abgelehnt.
- Gaitsch und Leonard arbeiteten als Producer mit Madonna an dem True Blue Album und boten ihr den Song an. Madonna akzeptierte, schrieb aber ihren eigenen Text dazu.
- Fans vermuten, dass die Insel Ambergris Caye sein könne, da deren Hauptstadt "San Pedro" heisst, und dieser Name im Song genannt wird. Andererseits hielt sich Madonna zu der Entstehungszeit des Songs in einer Stadt namens San Pedro in den USA auf.
- Madonna selber hat zu dem Song nur gesagt, es wäre ein Song über Lateinamerika und die grossartigen Menschen die dort leben, sonst aber zu keinem Zeitpunkt weitere Hinweise gegeben. Der Text selber ist ein einfaches Liebeslied.
